August 2025 marked a transition point for organic search. Google moved from the June core update into a global spam update, AI Overviews continued changing click behaviour, AI Mode expanded internationally, and OpenAI introduced GPT-5. The practical lesson was not to abandon SEO, but to manage visibility across traditional results, AI-generated answers and technically secure websites.

Strong crawlability, useful content, accurate business information, credible evidence and measurable user value remained essential. AI search added new surfaces, but it did not remove the need for SEO fundamentals. Our guide on how to rank in AI search engines explains the broader multi-platform framework.

    Key August 2025 SEO Developments

    The month in one view

    Four developments shaped the month:

    • Google launched the August 2025 spam update on August 26.
    • Site owners were still assessing the June 2025 core update, completed July 17.
    • Google expanded AI Mode to more than 180 additional countries and territories in English.
    • OpenAI launched GPT-5 on August 7.

These events affected different layers of visibility. The spam and core updates concerned Google’s ranking systems. AI Overviews and AI Mode changed how results were presented. GPT-5 affected how users interacted with ChatGPT, but it was not a Google ranking update.

    What businesses needed to prioritise

A traffic drop could come from ranking loss, lower demand, seasonality, AI-generated answers, technical problems or CTR changes. Teams needed page-level and query-level evidence before rewriting content, deleting URLs or changing site architecture.

Search Console, analytics, rank tracking and conversion data should be reviewed together. Rankings alone could not explain performance when a page retained its position but received fewer clicks.

    Google August 2025 Spam Update

Google released the August 2025 spam update on August 26 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time. It applied globally and to all languages, and Google confirmed completion on September 22. Google did not announce a unique target or special new spam category.

    What the update meant

Spam updates improve systems designed to identify practices that violate Google’s spam policies. They are different from broad core updates, which reassess how Google ranks helpful and reliable results.

Site owners should not assume every ranking change during the rollout was a penalty. Compare timing, affected directories, query groups, countries and page types. Sites with doorway pages, scaled low-value content, deceptive redirects, hacked pages or manipulative links had clear reasons to conduct a policy review, but Google did not identify one exclusive target.

Dexora’s August 2025 spam update guide provides a dedicated investigation framework.

During a rollout, avoid broad changes based on a few days of volatility. Record the start date, segment performance and wait for enough post-rollout data to identify sustained losses.

Review pages losing impressions and position, sections with deindexing, manual actions, security warnings, suspicious links and content created mainly to manipulate demand. Fix genuine quality and policy problems after the rollout; changing titles, adding schema or increasing word count alone is not a recovery strategy.

    June 2025 Core Update Recovery

The June 2025 core update began June 30 and completed July 17 after just over sixteen days. August was the first complete month in which many site owners could compare stable pre-update and post-update performance.

    What Google officially advised

Google describes core updates as broad improvements that do not target individual websites or pages. It recommends comparing performance after the rollout with a similar earlier period, reviewing top pages and queries, and distinguishing small position changes from sustained, substantial drops.

A move from position two to four does not normally justify a complete rewrite. A decline from position four to twenty-nine across important queries requires deeper investigation. Google advises against quick fixes and says deleting content should be a last resort.

Use Dexora’s June 2025 core update recovery guide for the complete process.

    Practical recovery framework

    1. Compare at least one full week after completion with a comparable pre-update period.
    2. Separate Web, Image, Video, News and Discover performance where relevant.
    3. Identify whether losses are sitewide, template-specific or topic-specific.
    4. Review the pages that replaced you, not only the pages that declined.
    5. Assess whether competitors offer stronger evidence, explanations, tools or current information.
    6. Improve the complete user experience rather than adding isolated SEO elements.

A review should examine originality, intent satisfaction, factual reliability, author accountability, internal duplication and whether the page gives users a clear reason to choose it.

AI Overviews and Organic Click Behaviour

AI Overviews changed informational search because Google could answer part of a query before the user visited a website. The impact varied by query, industry and methodology, so one universal CTR-loss percentage should not be applied to every site.

    What the Pew study found

Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% without one. They clicked a source inside the summary in only 1% of visits and ended browsing sessions more often.

The study showed a real click-displacement risk, particularly for queries satisfied by concise answers. It did not prove that every AI Overview causes the same reduction.

Google presented a different perspective in August 2025, stating that Search continued sending billions of clicks to the web and that AI experiences were driving more queries and higher-quality outbound visits.

The responsible approach was to monitor page-level CTR and conversions. Dexora’s guide on how Google AI Overviews affect SEO explains the implications in depth.

How content strategy needed to change

Generic definitions and easily summarised articles faced greater substitution risk. Better opportunities existed in original research, detailed comparisons, practical tools, documented methodology, real examples and visual demonstrations that added value beyond a summary.

Answer-first formatting improved clarity, but formatting alone was not a ranking system. Google’s guidance remained that standard SEO practices applied; no special AI file or unique schema type was required.

Follow the Google AI Overview ranking guide for implementation without treating inclusion as guaranteed.

AI Mode Expansion and the GPT-5 Launch

    Google AI Mode expanded internationally

Google expanded AI Mode to more than 180 additional countries and territories in English and added more agentic and personalised capabilities. More users could ask longer questions and continue through follow-up prompts.

For SEO teams, this increased the value of connected service pages, comparisons, guides, local information and original evidence. Google continued to state that normal SEO foundations remained relevant; businesses did not need a duplicate AI website or artificial question-and-answer copy.

    GPT-5 changed the ChatGPT experience

OpenAI introduced GPT-5 on August 7 and made it the new default model for logged-in ChatGPT users. OpenAI described it as a unified system able to respond quickly or use deeper reasoning depending on the task.

The launch mattered because AI assistants were becoming independent research interfaces. It did not create a known Google ranking signal. Businesses needed to evaluate whether ChatGPT accurately understood their brand and services rather than assuming the launch required immediate site changes.

The distinctions between rankings, answers and citations are covered in Dexora’s SEO vs AEO vs GEO comparison.

WordPress Security and Technical SEO Alerts

Website security mattered because a compromised WordPress installation could produce spam pages, redirects, malware warnings, lost trust and visibility damage.

    AI Engine vulnerability

Wordfence disclosed an arbitrary file-upload vulnerability affecting AI Engine versions 2.9.3 and 2.9.4. It could be exploited by authenticated subscribers where the Public API was enabled without authentication. Version 2.9.5 fixed the issue.

UiCore Elements, Elementor and Dokan Pro

UiCore Elements versions through 1.3.0 had an unauthenticated arbitrary file-read vulnerability, patched in 1.3.1. A related Elementor issue affected versions through 3.30.2 and was patched in 3.30.3.

Dokan Pro versions through 4.0.5 had a vendor-level privilege-escalation vulnerability. The patched version, 4.0.6, was released August 6.

The correct response was an update process, tested backups, minimum user privileges, removal of unused extensions and monitoring. A technical SEO service should include security-related crawl checks because compromised pages can become an organic-search problem.

    August 2025 SEO Action Plan

    First seven days

    • Confirm whether losses aligned with the core update or spam rollout.
    • Export Search Console page and query data.
    • Update vulnerable plugins and verify backups.
    • Check manual actions, security issues and server responses.
    • Identify high-impression pages losing CTR.

    Days eight to twenty-one

    • Improve pages with sustained ranking losses.
    • Consolidate genuinely duplicative content.
    • Add first-party examples, expert review and transparent sources.
    • Strengthen links between services, guides and case studies.
    • Replace generic content with tools, comparisons or original evidence.

    Days twenty-two to thirty

    • Track target prompts and AI citations manually.
    • Compare qualified leads and conversions, not only traffic.
    • Monitor recrawling and indexing.
    • Document changes for later evaluation.
    • Build a continuing SEO, AEO and GEO measurement process.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What was the biggest Google SEO update in August 2025?

Google launched the August 2025 spam update on August 26. It applied globally and across all languages, then completed September 22. Google described it as a broad spam update and did not announce one tactic as its exclusive target.

When did the June 2025 core update finish?

The update started June 30 and completed July 17. Site owners were advised to compare equivalent periods after completion and investigate sustained page-and-query losses instead of reacting to short-term volatility.

Did AI Overviews reduce organic clicks?

Pew found traditional-result clicks were 8% when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one. Impact still varied by query and website, so businesses needed to analyse their own CTR, conversions and SERP layouts.

Did schema guarantee AI Overview visibility?

No. Structured data can help Google understand eligible page information, but Google stated that no special schema was required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Markup needed to match visible content and could not guarantee inclusion.

Was SGE still the correct name?

No. Search Generative Experience was the experimental name used before Google adopted “AI Overviews.” Historical references may mention SGE, but current content should use Google AI Overviews and AI Mode accurately.

Did GPT-5 directly change Google rankings?

No confirmed evidence showed that GPT-5 changed Google’s ranking systems. Its launch mattered because ChatGPT became a more capable discovery interface, but Google ranking analysis still required Google update and Search Console evidence.

Should websites create separate content for SEO and GEO?

Usually not. Strong content can support rankings, answers and citations when it is technically accessible, useful, well sourced and clearly structured. Separate pages are justified only where user intent is genuinely different.

How should a site respond to a spam update?

Review Google’s spam policies, security status, scaled low-value pages, deceptive practices and suspicious links. Avoid panic-driven changes during rollout. After completion, correct genuine violations and measure recovery over time.

Why do WordPress vulnerabilities matter for SEO?

A compromised plugin can enable malware, redirects, injected pages, stolen accounts or outages. These problems can damage trust, crawling, indexing and conversions, making updates, backups and limited privileges part of technical search risk management.

What should businesses measure after August 2025?

Track impressions, rankings, CTR, conversions, indexed pages, AI citations, brand mentions and competitor visibility. Separate ranking loss from click displacement and demand changes. The most useful KPI is qualified business impact.
