General contractors face a unique SEO challenge. Unlike plumbers who serve emergency calls or electricians who do rapid residential work, contractors pursue projects with longer sales cycles, higher job values, and more research-intensive buyer journeys. Your SEO must address both the discovery phase and the evaluation phase of contractor selection.
How Homeowners and Businesses Find Contractors on Google
Contractor searches fall into three categories. Project-specific searches like “kitchen remodel contractor [city]” or “commercial building contractor [city]”. Proximity searches like “general contractor near me”. And comparison searches like “best contractor in [city]” where AI search is increasingly providing direct recommendations.
Your SEO strategy must capture all three categories with different content types targeting each intent.
Google Maps for Contractors
The local pack matters for contractors even though project lead times are longer than for emergency services. Set your GBP primary category to General Contractor. Add secondary categories for every project type you specialize in including Kitchen Remodeling, Bathroom Renovation, Home Addition, Commercial Contractor, and New Construction.
Your photo strategy is critical. Completed project photos from multiple angles. Before-and-after comparisons. In-progress photos showing your team working. The scale and quality of your project photos directly influence whether a potential client calls.
Portfolio and Project Pages — Your Most Important Content
Every completed project is a content opportunity. Create individual project pages or blog posts describing the project type, location (at city or neighborhood level), scope, timeline, and outcome. These pages rank for project-type plus city keywords, serve as EEAT evidence of your experience, and create internal links building authority to your main service pages.
A contractor with 20 documented project pages has significantly stronger topical authority signals than a contractor with a single projects gallery page.
Schema for General Contractors
LocalBusiness schema with complete NAP and service area. GeneralContractor schema. Service schema on every service type page. FAQPage schema answering questions about project costs, timelines, permits, and process. Project or CreativeWork schema on individual project portfolio pages.
