Buyers now ask AI for a shortlist. Is your name on it?

"Who is the best HVAC company near me?" "Which CRM is right for a 20-person sales team?" "Recommend a family law attorney in Phoenix." More buyers start with a question like this in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, and the answer is a short list of names. The businesses on that list get the call. Everyone else never knew there was a decision being made.

Generative engines build those lists from sources they trust: review platforms, directories, industry publications, news, forums and websites that describe a company clearly and consistently. Ranking on Google helps, but it is not enough. Generative engine optimization is the work of making your brand the obvious, well-documented choice in every one of those sources.

How generative engines decide who to recommend

No AI assistant has a paid slot for recommendations. They assemble an answer from what the web says about you.

01

They search the live web

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini run web searches for many prompts, then read the pages that come back. If those pages never mention you, the answer will not either.

  • Rank for the comparison searches
  • Be listed where buyers compare
  • Keep crawlers unblocked
02

They look for consensus

An assistant is more confident naming a business that several independent sources describe in the same way: reviews, directories, articles and your own site.

  • Mentions on trusted third-party sites
  • Consistent facts everywhere
  • Recent, specific reviews
03

They need clear entity facts

The model has to know who you are, what you do, where you work and who you serve. Vague, inconsistent descriptions make it skip you or describe you wrongly.

  • One clear positioning statement
  • Structured data on your site
  • Accurate profiles everywhere

Generative engine optimization: the 2026 guide

What GEO is, where the term came from, how each AI platform differs and the work that actually gets a brand recommended.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of increasing how often, and how accurately, generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot mention and recommend your brand in their answers.

Where answer engine optimization focuses on getting your content quoted for informational questions, GEO focuses on commercial and comparison prompts: "best", "top", "recommend", "alternatives to", "who should I hire". The goal is simple. When an AI builds a shortlist for your category in your market, your business should be on it.

Where the term GEO comes from: the KDD 2024 research

The term was popularised by the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al.), written by researchers from Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi and presented at the ACM KDD conference in 2024. They built a benchmark of thousands of queries and tested how content changes affected a source's visibility in AI-generated answers.

Change testedEffect on visibility
Adding relevant quotationsLargest improvement
Adding statisticsStrong improvement
Citing credible sourcesStrong improvement
Fluency and readability editsModerate improvement
Keyword stuffingWorse than the original

The best methods improved visibility by up to 40%. The lesson for businesses is clear: generative engines reward evidence, not repetition.

Why ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot recommend different brands

Each assistant uses different search partners, indexes and source preferences, so the same prompt can return different names on different platforms:

  • ChatGPT combines its trained knowledge with live search through third-party providers and OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. ChatGPT SEO covers this platform in depth.
  • Gemini and Google AI Mode lean on Google's index, Google Business Profile and the Knowledge Graph.
  • Microsoft Copilot relies on Bing, so Bing indexing and Bing Places matter.
  • Perplexity runs its own searches and shows sources openly, often favouring recent, well-referenced pages and community discussions.

That is why a single tactic is never enough. Read more in our analysis of why AI engines cite different sources.

Step 1: make your brand an unambiguous entity

Before an AI can recommend you, it must be sure who you are. We align every public description of your business:

  • One positioning sentence used everywhere: what you do, for whom, where
  • Identical name, address, phone, hours and services on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and key directories
  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your real profiles
  • An about page that names founders, credentials, locations and proof
  • Wikidata or knowledge panel work where your business genuinely qualifies

If an assistant already describes you wrongly, we trace and fix the sources feeding it. See how to correct wrong information in ChatGPT.

Step 2: earn mentions where AI looks for consensus

Generative engines trust what others say about you more than what you say about yourself. We build that independent evidence:

  • Category lists and roundups that rank for "best [service] in [city]" or "top [software] for [use case]"
  • Review platforms that matter in your industry: Google, Yelp, BBB, Clutch, G2, Capterra, Avvo, Healthgrades and others
  • Industry publications and local news through expert commentary and data-led digital PR
  • Associations, certifications and partner directories that confirm credentials
  • Community discussions where real customers talk about providers, handled honestly and never with fake accounts

Step 3: publish the pages AI needs to recommend you

Assistants can only repeat what is documented. Most websites never state who they are best for, what they cost or how they compare. We create:

  • "Who we work with" pages that define your ideal customer and use cases
  • Honest comparison and alternatives pages for your category
  • Pricing ranges and service details in plain text
  • Case studies with specific numbers, names and dates
  • Location and industry pages with real local proof

No manipulation. Hidden text, fake reviews and prompt injection aimed at AI crawlers are risky and short-lived. Every GEO tactic we use is something we would be happy for a customer to read.

How to measure generative engine optimization

We track a fixed set of prompts that matter to your revenue, across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot, and report every month:

  • Mention rate: how often you are named for each prompt
  • Share of voice against your top competitors
  • Position and description: whether you are listed first and described correctly
  • Cited sources that drive each answer, so we know where to earn the next mention
  • AI referral traffic and leads in GA4

AI answers vary from one run to the next, so we test each prompt several times and report trends, not single screenshots. Read our guide to tracking your brand in AI search.

Where we get your brand recommended

We optimise for every major generative engine and track each one separately, because each draws on different sources.

AI platforms update their models and sources often. We re-test your prompts every month and report changes.

Question not answered here?Email ahmad@dexoradigital.com, we reply to every message.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of increasing how often and how accurately AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot mention and recommend your brand. It combines entity clean-up, third-party mentions, reviews, recommendation-ready content and ongoing tracking of AI answers.
What does a GEO agency do?
A GEO agency researches the prompts your buyers use, tests which brands AI assistants recommend, maps the sources behind those answers and then builds the evidence that gets your brand included: consistent brand facts, mentions on trusted sites, reviews, clear content and structured data. It reports your share of voice in AI answers every month.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Yes, but it builds on SEO. SEO aims to rank your pages in search results. GEO aims to get your brand named inside AI-generated answers, which depends heavily on what other websites say about you, not only on your own pages. Many AI assistants search the web before answering, so strong SEO remains the foundation.
How long does generative engine optimization take?
Corrections to how AI describes your business can show within weeks once sources are fixed. New recommendations usually take 2 to 4 months, because third-party mentions, reviews and new pages need time to be published, indexed and picked up. We report progress monthly so you can see the trend.
How much do GEO services cost?
Our GEO setup project costs $800 to $1,500 depending on your market and how much needs fixing, and monthly GEO starts from $700 a month. Companies that want SEO, AEO and GEO together get a custom quote. There is no long-term contract and the first audit is free.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No honest agency can. AI answers vary between users, sessions and model updates, and no platform sells recommendation slots. What we can do is measure your mention rate and share of voice on a fixed set of prompts and steadily improve the evidence those answers are built from.
How do you track brand mentions in AI answers?
We run a fixed set of revenue-driving prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot several times each month, record whether and how your brand is mentioned and which sources are cited, and combine that with SEMrush AI Visibility data and AI referral traffic in GA4.
Does GEO work for local businesses?
Yes. When someone asks for "the best dentist in Austin", assistants lean on Google Business Profiles, reviews, local directories and local news. Local businesses with consistent facts and strong recent reviews can be recommended ahead of much larger competitors.
What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
AEO, answer engine optimization, gets your content quoted for informational questions. GEO gets your brand recommended for commercial prompts such as "best", "top" or "who should I hire". Most businesses need both, and our monthly plans can cover them together.
Will GEO tactics get my site penalised?
Not the way we do it. We avoid hidden text, fake reviews, paid link schemes and prompt injection aimed at AI crawlers. Everything we build, from reviews to directory listings to content, is real and useful to customers, which is also what makes it last.

Get your name into the AI shortlist.

Send us your business and your top competitors today. Within 48 hours you will see which AI assistants recommend you, which recommend them, and what it will take to change that.
